Peripheral Blood Film (PBF) Test Description
A Peripheral Blood Film (PBF) is a laboratory procedure that involves examining a blood smear under a microscope to study red and white blood cells, as well as platelets. This test is often used in conjunction with a complete blood count (CBC) and can help diagnose various diseases.
Indications of the Test
A PBF test is typically ordered when there are abnormal findings from an automated CBC or when a healthcare provider suspects a specific clinical disease. It is useful for diagnosing conditions such as:
- Babesiosis
- Malaria
- Microfilaria
- Trypanosomiasis
- Leishmaniasis
Patient Preparation/Instructions
To prepare for a PBF test, a drop of blood is smeared lightly and quickly on a clean glass slide using a wedge technique, leaving a thin “feather” edge, particularly for red blood cells. After staining the slide, the examination begins.
Typical Reference Values
The normal values for a PBF test depend on the specific clinical context and the patient’s age. Abnormalities observed in the test can help diagnose various diseases, such as viral illnesses, myelodysplastic syndromes, malignancies, and inflammatory disorders.
